celebrating chapter 300, short interview of Chen Mou

Filed under: Ravages of Time — Tags: — merc @ 11:05 am

based on this report (December 2009)

Q: Since “New Youth” has changed to a bi-weekly schedule, is it still possible to finish the pages on time?
A: It’s great. Now it’s possible to avoid more “cease of publication”.

Q: How has your life changed after you became a dad? Are you plotting Ravages in your head 24 hours a day? Even when you’re taking care of the baby?
A: I have way less time to rest, and pretty much gave up games. I generally think about the story when I’m not working. But during any other time my brain is just blank, like I’m old and senile.

Q: How do you feel about Ravages getting into other media franchise? What other products will be introduced besides the online game?
A: I’m not sure about others, but there was a recent book (novel) deal. And the writer is a big name author.
(…who cares -_-;)

Q: Is it really tiring to plan both the Guandu and the Eastern Region arc at the same time? Does Pang Tong’s appearance mean another assassination attempt on Cao Cao?
A: The pressure is always there, because the storylines are generally layered. In Romance of the Three Kingdoms Pang Tong will join the Sun clan sooner or later, so it’s normal to see him show up.

Q: Will there be any non-trivial female character in the future? Will Zhao Yun have more screentime?
A: Yes, and she will have long-term effects on the story. Zhao Yun might not be part of main plots, but he’ll have plenty to do on the side.

Q: There are more and more readers from overseas, and there are many Ravages discussion forums on the internet. What do you think about their fanwork?
A: There have always been lurking talents in the world. They just lacked a platform to express themselves. I was fortunate because I can write and draw. And now thanks to this great big platform, talented people will finally be seen all over the place.

Q: Has Lü Meng’s personality been decided from the beginning? Are you surprised that readers like his personality?
A: Lü Meng used to be vulgar and crude. Only after following Sun Quan did he began to really hit the books. I’m just going by what the historical text says.

Q: After nine years Ravages has finally reached chapter 300. As the author, how do you feel about that?
A: I continue to regret starting this, haha! (readers may feel the same way)

  1. Too short interview. Looking forward too moore female charachters. Nice translation as always.

    • Thanks! Yeah, very short. Most of the space were taken up by fanart and an essay (can’t read the small image), it seems.

  2. thanks for the translation & link ! I bet the new girl will be Zhen Luo. can’t wait to see her ^^

    Comment by lindaiyuzz — December 9, 2009 @ 11:35 pm

    • Many people agree (Zhen Luo or Zhen Mi? But same person). :D

  3. Thank you for the translation! I really wonder about the new girl. I think she will be Huang Yueying (Kongming’s wife). Anyway, when the 8th genius will appear?

    • Sorry I don’t know. Let’s wait and see. :)

  4. Thanks for the translation! Wow, I’d never realized before this that Ravages of Time has been running for nine years…

    • If everything works out, it could grow old with us! XD

  5. Yueying, Shu Zi, and Zhen Ji are all candidates for long term important females.

YY gets a high INT stat, Shu Zi’s relationship with Liu Bei and LYH will be quite fun, and Zhen Ji is basically Fang’s pawn right now no?

    Comment by Boo — December 12, 2009 @ 5:49 am

    • Hmm, I’m not sure if the question implies “new female character”. If yes, then Shu Zi is not one of them, and possibly not even Zhen (since she was mentioned). But who knows. ;)

  6. Thx for the translation!

And I saw a page with some descriptions(?) about Eight Geniuses next to the interview page…Could you translate that one too?

I found full text in here (http://tieba.baidu.com/f?kz=681885911)

    Comment by Meer — December 16, 2009 @ 12:50 pm

    • Oh. On second look,it’s not a description or something…somekind of symbol animal stuff…sorry.

      Comment by Meer — December 16, 2009 @ 12:54 pm

    • Uh… that one is kind of difficult for me to translate properly (a lot of literary references too!). The gist is that the poster is comparing the Eight Geniuses to Eight animals (some imaginary) symbolically. Crane, deer, fox, crow/raven, swan, phoenix, dragon, and elk.

      Comment by merc — December 16, 2009 @ 6:44 pm

      • An…ELK?!? Wow. That’s kinda ridiculous.

That goes to 8th genius, right? If it is somekind of clue for his identity….

…anyway, did he ever show up in this series? How can they compare a character never appeared in the series to an elk?

        Comment by Meer — December 17, 2009 @ 12:16 am

        • That part will be lost in translation, because elk in Chinese has a nickname, “[an animal] that doesn’t resemble four [similar] animals” (note that this nickname was coined in the ancient past). So the poster is saying the Eighth so far is still a mystery and can probably only be compared to something like that.

          Comment by merc — December 17, 2009 @ 12:04 pm

      • nice point about Yuan Fang being a crane. I google-translated it and it says something about elegance and a reference to recent chapters. Volume 18 also features Yuan Fang wearing something black-and-white that.. admittedly looks crane-like to me.

        Comment by lindaiyuzz — December 18, 2009 @ 7:12 am

    • Hey…hold on a sec.

I THOUGHT this article is from Mr. Chan’s head……but really it is?? It says about some discussions among fans…and…the writer on the scanned image is NOT 陳某…? WTF……

Is this some kind of fan theory stuff,or official?

      Comment by Deceiver — December 19, 2009 @ 2:32 am

      • No, the link in the comment is not written by Chen Mou.

The majority of the celebration edition is fan work. My post only covers the short interview of Mr. Chen.

        Comment by merc — December 19, 2009 @ 7:24 am

      • Well. I can understand about fanarts but…fan-made theory,on the MAGAZINE…?? I think that is kinda ridiculous. You know, actually, people can find much more interesting thories on RoT forums… :(

…I wonder what will happen on chapter 400 and so on….

Well,it was worth a read anyway. 麋鹿 for 8th genius was hilarious. I was almost convinced.
