help! searching for Yang Xiu’s poetry translation

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — merc @ 1:46 pm

Quick, who can find collection of Yang Xiu’s poems? I Googled and baidued for hours; the poem is something like “Rhapsody to Goddess” or “To the Tune of the Goddess”, NOT Cao Zhi’s version, though they may be found together.

I don’t even understand the Chinese original! (it’s in classical Chinese) Googled/Baidued for Chinese explanation too, haven’t found any. Hope somebody answers me in the Baidu forum.

魏 杨修《神女赋》

May be found in the complete Book of Later Han, volume 51, Yang Biao and Yang Xiu, Eight???
(全后汉文卷五十一 杨彪杨修 八)

Below is the closest association I could find on his poem, but conveniently doesn’t talk about the line I want.

UPDATE: one explanation by a fan

  1. Well, God knows it I don’t know Chinese, and I didn’t have any luck in finding the interpretation of this poem either; but after looking up on the characters, I think it might mean something like this: “I have feelings [for her, the fairy], but still I [must?] try to conceal them; when I dream, our souls are connected”. Meaning the writer likes the girl but can’t express his feelings, thus he can only reach for her in the dream. It actually sounds a lot like a legend of Cao Zhi, perpetuated by the Zhi-Pi-Zhen love triangle theorists, I once read about: after Zhen died, Zhi was given some of her old belongings (among them her old pillow, which was a very odd thing to be given away considering its implication in love affairs). When he was returning to his estate and crossed a river, he had a dream about her. which inspired the famous poem Gan Zhen Fu/Luo Shen Fu. I’m not confident about this explanation thogh (again, don’t know chinese and i might have misunderstood the grammar of the whole line), still I hope it helps.

    • Yes it does, at least one other person confirms the gist of that line, pretty much the same way.

      Thanks for all that researching!

  2. To keep the right I must conceal the feeling; but our souls are connected when I’m dreaming. I think so :D
