“Fei, Where Ink Cannot Do His Battles Justice”
(wordplay with his name that is lost in translation)
Zhang Fei was Liu Bei’s younger oath brother. On the surface he seemed like a brainless brute, but he was actually a meticulous strategist. Before Zhuge Liang joined Liu Bei, Zhang Fei had always been Liu Bei’s military adviser. Zhang Fei’s other identity was an artist who enjoyed painting landscape, as well as being able to imitate handwriting. He was certainly a warrior who could handle both physical and mental challenges.
Zhang Fei was even more unstoppable on the battlefield. Not many could take on Lü Bu and live to tell about it, while Zhang Fei fought Lü Bu four times, and even heavily injured the latter in their final confrontation.
Having been known for painting with blood, Zhang Fei’s name strikes fear in his opponents’ hearts. What an inadequate feat (wordplay callback to the title) it is to incorporate his artistry into the battles of Tan county and Changban Slope. Let’s review the seventeen battles of our Painter of the Peach Garden!
